En las casas de Ayuntamiento de esta villa y conzejo de Villaviciosa a veinte y dos días del mes de Enero de mil setecientos sesenta y ocho para sacar las compulsas que se piden se juntaron los señores D. Rodrigo Miguel de Balbín Busto Juez noble de esta dicha villa y su conzejo y el referido Clabero cada uno con su llave y yo escribano como del Ayuntamiento con la que me corresponde. Se habrió el Archivo de los Padrones y en la gaveta segunda salió uno hecho en virtud de Real Zedula en el año pasado del mil seiscientos ochenta y seis siendo Juez Noble en este dicho Conzejo D. Fernando Valdés y Caballeros Regidores Comisarios D. Thoribio Sánchez de Pando y D. Antonio Valbín Busto Empadronador Noble por la Parroquia de Sⁿ Vicente D. Diego de Peón Valdés y por el estado llano Esteban de Barzena y al folio siete vuelta a los catorce renglones ay uno que dice – María de Cayao viuda de Toribio Cayao y Domingo y Francisco sus hijos menores hidalgos¹. Hallase firmado de todos los referidos excepto del empadronador pechero y autorizado de Pedro Gonzalez ¿Villarmil? escríbano que fue de este Ayuntamiento. Y prosiguiendo en dicha busca en el Padrón que se hizo con la misma solegnid. en el año pasado de mil seiscientos noventa y ocho siendo Juez en esta dicha villa y su conzejo por el Estado Noble y Regidores Comisarios D. Francisco de Hevia Miranda caballero del Orden de Santiago y Alférez Mayor de este consejo y en la lista que se dio de la Parroquia de Coro siendo Empadronador Noble Antonio de la Cuesta y pechero Domingo Martín y al folio cin^qta y ocho vuelta a los siete reng^s ay uno que dize Domingo Cayao hidalgo y su hijo Francisco y a la conclusión se halla firmado de todos los referidos y autorizado de Joseph Garzía Poladura es^no que fue de este Ayuntamiento.

(1) HijoDalgo o Hidalgo o ydalgo de sangre es, según la Real Academia Española, una persona que por su sangre es de una clase noble y distinguida.”Hijosdalgo” es decir “Hijos de algo”, esto es, que sus ascendientes se hubieran distinguido por sus hechos o por su posición; los hidalgos eran conocidos por diversas clases, siendo los más importantes aquellos de “solar reconocido”, o “de casa solariega” que pregonaba la nobleza e importancia de sus ascendientes.

En muchos pueblos existieron hidalgos que eran labradores, zapateros, comerciantes y hasta “pobres de solemnidad”. Y junto a ellos convivían otras personas que eran ricas, que poseían bienes y que, sin embargo, eran “pecheros” tenían que pagar los tributos “y todas sus haciendas no les bastaban para alcanzar la hidalguía”. In the City Hall Houses of this village and Council of Villaviciosa on January 22^nd, 1768, to take the certified copies that are requested they gathered Mr. Rodrigo Miguel de Balbín Busto Noble Judge of this town and its council and referred Clabber each of them with their keys an I scribe of this City Hall with which I belong. Vicente Mr. Diego de Peón Valdés and by the pawn state Mr. Esteban de Bárcena and in the back of 7th. sheet in the 14th wow there is one which says – María de Cayao widow of Toribio Cayao and Domingo y Francisco her minor sons hidalgos¹. It signed by all the referred except the pawner enumerator and authorised by Pedro González ¿Villarmil? who was scribe of this Council Hall. And continuing on that searches in the Census List taken with the same solemnity in the past year 1798 being Judge of this said town and its council by the Noble State and Aldermen Commissioners D. Francisco de Hevia Miranda knight of the Order of Santiago and Mayor Lieutenant of this council and in the list taken in the parish of Coro being Noble Enumerator Antonio de la Cuesta and pawn Domingo Martín and in the 58th sheet in the 7th row there is one which says- Domingo Cayao and his son Francisco and in the conclusion it’s signed by all the referred and authorised by Joseph Garzía Poladura who was scribe of this Council Hall.

(1) HijoDalgo, HijoDealgo or Hidalgo in Spain literally means «Son of Something» and denotes Noble by Blood. As society evolved from feudalism the eldest son typically inherited «Titled Nobility»; all other sons (and daughters) were still considered to be of noble blood and had certain legal entitlements such as exemption from taxes, right of petition to the monarch, marriage, etc.

In many villages there were gentlemen farmers, cobblers, traders and even «extremely poor people» who were «Hijosdalgo». And they lived next to others who were wealthy and who own properties but, however, they were not «Hijosdalgo» and had to pay taxes «and all its finances are not sufficient to achieve the nobility».
